In 2023, ALUS started its first on-the-ground trial in the continental United States. Following the formation of the Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC), the program will work with communities and potential participants to get its first project in the ground.

Spearheaded in 2008, the P.E.I. ALUS program is co-managed by the P.E.I. Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and the P.E.I. Department of Communities, Land and Environment as part of the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) suite of programs. Prince Edward Island is the only province in Canada with a province-wide program.

Quebec

ALUS entered Quebec in 2016 with the ALUS Montérégie, a partnership between ALUS Canada and the Fédération de l’UPA de la Montérégie, which is a branch of the provincial farmer’s union headquartered in the South Shore region of Montreal. In 2020, the ALUS Outaouais program launched, meaning ALUS now covers 250 municipalities in the Quebec, including several watersheds: the Huron, Hazen-Bleury, de la Barbotte, Vaudreuil-Soulanges and Yamaska.

ALUS Norfolk remains the oldest continuously running ALUS program in Canada with over 200 farm families already engaged and more than 6,000 acres enrolled. There are currently eight ALUS communities in Ontario who are dedicated to producing healthier landscapes.

  • Wascana and Upper Qu’Appelle Watersheds Association Taking Responsibility (WUQWATR), a non-profit, source-water protection agency.
  • Saskatchewan Farm Stewardship Association (SaskFSA)
  • ALUS SODCAP, in partnership with the South of the Divide Conservation Action Program (SODCAP)

  • +25,000 acres of land enrolled as wetland, grassland, woodland and grazing projects
